I have a 2007 Ultra w/ ~12k miles & as I was driving today, I couldn't downshift lower than 4th gear when coming to a stop a bunch of times. The shifter would go down but just didn't downshift & felt like it had less tension b/c of that. Had to start off in 4th gear to get going again until I got it home. A few times it would downshift through 3rd, 2nd, & into 1st though. Nothing is leaking, no strange noises, no check engine light or anything... Any ideas?

 

Check all of your linkage and levers for stripped spilnes or loose/missing bolts. Get right on down there and watch as you change gears...pretty good chance something simple just isn't moving when it should

 

Could also inspect your clutch cable and do a full clutch adjustment at the basket and at the perch. If all else is checked as stated above and everything is good, check throw out bearing, etc.

 

Thanks guys. I took a look at everything down there & everything seems OK. Fluids checked out also. We rode 125 mi. yesterday & it didn't happen once, she changed gears perfectly every time. No idea but fingers crossed it doesn't happen again. I didn't check clutch adjustment (didn't know how) but that will be my next go to if it happens again.
