It has been ten years since I rode. I went out on a demo ride. What a thrill. These bikes have come a long way. Thanks

RE: 06 ultra or classic ?
I will be interested in seeing some responses to this also.
There are several things on the Ultra I want:
Lighted Tour Pak
80 Watt Harmon Carmen Stereo - Quad Speakers
CB/Intercom
Vented Fairing lowers.
Cruise control
Any other stuff?
I know you can add all this to the classic - not sure how the math works out.

RE: 06 ultra or classic ?
I just purchased an Ultra. It is one sweet machine.
Since my wife and I plan to ride it a lot across long distances, the integrated Intercom (and the ability to hear the great new sound system via your helmet speakers) was HUGE. We can ride for hours on end, listening to tunes, and chatting away.
The vented lowers are VERY functional, and additional lighting is always a good idea.
As always, the money you spend and the features you want should depend on how you plan to ride it.

RE: 06 ultra or classic ?
I went with the Classic because I didn't want a CB, I didn't think I needed the lower fairings, and I wanted the tour pac to be quick detach, and that is easier on the classic with out the rear speakers, tour pac lights and CB antenna.
I do wish I had cruise control, and will probably add it. I also think there might be occasions when the lower fairing would be nice.
As far as the upgraded stereo amplifier on the Ultra, I think you loose that if you make the tour pac detachable, because the amp is mounted under the tour pac. Plus for 100.00 you can add HOGTUNES speakers and compensate for the higher powered radio.
If you want all the options that are on the Ultra, then get it, because it will cost you more to upgrade the Classic, than the difference in price between the two.
Regards,
Bill

RE: 06 ultra or classic ?
Had the same dilema, but when the dealer told me almost $900 to add cruise control I knew the Ultra was for me. I was not going to upgrade from a Fatboy to a touring model for longer rides and sacrafice cruise. I also had a lot of work done on my Fatboy like Heritage bags and a few other things. It really pays to buy what you want rather than save a few bucks upfront and then pay almost double to create what you clould have just purchased. Just my 2 cents!!
Love your color choice too!! I need to get some pics of the bike but with Harley using those colors on the Ultra as a screen saver it's like I have the best shot of all.

If you want a Ultra get one in 2001 i bought a new e glide classic because i could not find a ultra for retail i spent $3800 to upgrade the classic to a to ultra and still did not have criuse control or lower farings . When you get ready to sell the title will still say e glide classic . I bought a new 03 Ultra love it .

RE: 06 ultra or classic ?
Don't know if this is of any value: I bought my 05 Ultra 4 months ago and now have 10K miles of wonderful riding. I upgraded the headlight, added a garage door opener, siren, an American Flag and a POW Flag (Viet Nam Vet). Otherwise it's stock. When I put her in Cruise Control at 60 MPH and enjoy the back roads I get a cool 50+ MPG. I love the vented lower fairings and have rode in 22 deg w/o chaps although the cold does hit the knees between the upper and lower fairings. Love the tunes, CD, CB, Weather and Intercom. Note the passenger has controls for Intercom and radio. Also, the Tour Pack has lights.
I've only looked at the Classic. I didn't consider it because of the extras on the Ultra and the difference in price (out the door $23K).
If you don't ride in the cold; don't ride 2 up and/or want to talk to her; and don't care about cruise control then maybe, just maybe you wouldn't regret not popping for the Ultra. But my guess would be that if you are going to be touring (putting on the miles) you'd be happiest with an Ultra. If you just ride a couple of thousand miles a year, the Classic might be an OK choice.
Just my thoughts. Whatever your decision, you'll enjoy your new Harley and the compliments that keep coming!
Best wishes

RE: 06 ultra or classic ?
I just bought a Classic last week. We looked at the Ultra and was going to buy it. Personally I didn't like the lower fairings, however since I am still ridding (it's around 40 degrees) I wish I had them. The CB didn't interest me nor did the intercom. I know there are other options that aren't memtioned, but when I saw the color (black pearl & black cherry) I was sold and I'm not sorry.
bonzo2 memtioned cruise control for $900, my dealer told me they would install it for $525. Still a lot of money for something I'm not sure I'd use, although I do on my truck.

RE: 06 ultra or classic ?
Mike,
My brother-in-law has an 03 Ultra and he does the same thing.
He usually keeps the tour pak off. Put a power antenna under the fairing-so no antennas showing. Has the lowers off during the summer months.
he would still stick with the Ultra.
But, give him a half hour or so and he has it back to a full touring bike ready for a multi-state two-up ride.
He also gave me some advise about pipes - asking if I was gonna keep stock or get some pipes. Was thinking about keeping the pipes stock - Until he told me after the first time he rode in a group and had to look at the tac to shift he did a stage I.
