No, they are not required equipment.

 

Wife has em on her Sportster mounted under tank. Used to use them alot, novelty is gone, now rarely turns them on. Looks good just be sure to tap into a "Switched" lead as batteries can go dead.

 

I only use mine on dark country roads to be seen better from the side. You can do a nice job for 50+- Auto Zone carries multiple colors strips different lengths you can cut or plug to each other and mount with pre-installed double stick tape that last for years. Use a toggle and aux. power in fusebox so you don't catch your bike on fire lol

 

Decorating them in 60's and 70's with women not led's mostly 8D and enjoying it wasn't toxic or wrong, just a normal red blooded American male.

 

Not even California inspects bikes. Maybe new Jersey does.

 

Many states require an inspection so they can gouge you for the nice ugly sticker. Missouri did it.
