Default Back to quiet!

Finally got around to taking off the SE II one piece slip-ons and putting the stock pipes back on my 2005 RG, just before storing it for the winter. Had a great day so I was able to put some miles on it before removing the battery.

Didn't realize how much I missed the quiet. I can hear the radio and my wife again, without SHOUTING! Come spring, my neighbors won't get upset when I leave the house at 5:00am.

I still have the SE A/C and remap, and I swear, It pulls a lot harder from down low with the stock pipes than it ever did with the SE II's.

Can't wait to get back on it in the spring.

Welcome to the club. Actually after about 1000 miles on my brand new stockers, they have broken in and really have a nice tone to them.

So you had to put "Visitation" up for the winter?

Ya, Visitation is in hibernation for a few months. That's one of the down-sides to living in the midwest (Michigan). Can't ride all year. Good thing I stored it last weekend because it is down in the twentys today and snowing a little.

I remember a few months back when you put your stock pipes back on. Thought I would have had mine done before this, but just never took the time until now. Had to do it before I put her away though so I would know whether I wanted to stay stock in the spring. I really doubt that I will put the SE II's back on. My stock pipes only had about 800 miles on them when I took them off, so I would imagine after a few more hundred miles, they'll sound good and still be quiet.

Put my first scratches on my bike putting it away for the winter. Made me sick to my stomach. I was backing it into the shed, straining to get the tires to roll up on a couple of boards. I didn't notice that through all the pulling and rolling back and forth, I got a little off to one side of the shed. When the bike finally came up onto the boards, the tour pak hit a lawn chair that is hanging on the wall. Put about a 3 inch scratch and a gouge in the top, right corner of the lid. Man was I upset with myself for not being more careful. Should have looked the situation over a little better or waited until I had help.

But, I guess something was bound to happen sooner or later, but I was hoping it would be much, much, later. I'll worry about it in the spring now.

I recently traded-in my Superglide for an 06 RK Custom. The S/G had Vance & Hines Big Shots with the quiet baffles. Still, I had to use ear plugs to avoid the temporary subdued hearing after much riding. I've really appreciated the stock mufflers on the RK -- I'd thought I'd want the SE slip-ons, but now I'm not so sure. I think the neighbors, at 6AM, also like 'em.

My ride into work at Sea-Tac airport today started a 37 deg and will probably get up to 45 or so. Nice riding with fog/sun and no rain.

Happy holidays to all.

I too took off the S E and went back to stock. I couldn't beleive the bike was smoother and stronger bottem end, lost some on the top end ,but what really got my attention was the bike shifts much smoother Go Figure? must have something to do with back pressure. I bought the Touring Mufflers in the Big Book and added turn down and out end caps. These mufflers sound about the same as stock, but improve top end a little, but I don"t think enough to justify the cost unless you want to do the end cap deal. No ear plugs,so nice. Only draw back , in town people don't know you are next to them, louder pipes are safer in town, any way I,m happy. Randy.

You don't need louder pipes...just a good air horn!

got a scratch?? been there, done that - I am sure there are a few HD owners in the "Katrina" area that had there bikes under water that would love to have "only" a scratch - not trying to tell you not to be upset - just pointing out - its only a scratch

Sounds like a lot of us are switching back to stock pipes. I did the same in September and immediately noticed a stronger engine at low rpm's. I'm really sorry I didn't try the stock mufflers when I bought the '05 RK, but, wanted to make some noise I guess. Perhaps we all have to go through the noise thing. I really do love to hear a HD, but, I don't want to ride on a loud bike. Besides, the stock mufflers aren't all THAT quiet - they have a pretty nice rumble themselves.

I have talked with several people at my local HD dealer and was surprised how many have returned to stock pipes over the last few months. The ironic thing is, most said they put on aftermarket pipes (not all were SE II's) for more performance (and a louder tone) and ended up losing low end performance. Most of them said they switched back for the same reason I did. They got tried of not being able to hear the radio, talk to their passengers, and the fear of upsetting neighbors when they rode early/late in the day.

A couple riders verified what I thought. They did run their bikes on the dyno, both before and after the pipe switch and found more HP and torque with the stock pipes. They both said the Stage 1 A/C DOES increase the numbers throughout the range.

Unless you just like the noise, and/or feel you need more top end performance (which I don't cuz I don't run my bike hard), the stock pipes are all you need.

Each to their own peference of course, but I couldn't be happier I made the switch back to stock.
