I suffer from tinnitus, as well. The plugs are about all you can do. Unfortunately, the simple act of wearing a helment will create discomfort and, sometimes, pain. I always get a headache after wearing one (any type) for a lengthy period. I'm lucky I live in Ohio where I have a choice. One other thing. I know everyone means well and wants to help, but no advice is better than bad advice.

I have always had trouble with cheap ear plugs. They either didn't stay in my ear or when they did they hurt. I made the big leap and bought a pair of Big Ear's BE 1C. To be honest I was very nervous spending $300 on stereo ear plugs. I had them pre molded to my ear at the Motorcycle shoe in NYC. All I can say is they fit my ears like a glove. No pain at all and the sound is awesome when I plug in my IPOD. I cant wait for the snow to leave so I can ride with them.

That's the beauty of earplugs. They do NOT hinder your ability to hear road noises like cars, sirens or even your buddy talking to you from his bike. Ear plugs work by blocking the wind from beating on your eardrum. This constant buffeting on your eardrum does the most damage. I wear ear plugs and I can hear my buddy on his straight-piped FatBoy better than without my plugs
