Default 07 cruise control dies . . . dealer can't fix . . .

I've had my bike in the shop 3 times to repair the cruise control. They changed the entire module and that did not work. Last time they replaced the handbar switch and I made it 30 miles before the cruise control dropped out and would not reset. hasn't worked since.

I did find a post on codes and I got them out and wrote them down. The dealer is going to pick the bike up on Wednesday to take it back to the shop for another try.

We've eliminated the brake switches and the cable switch as the problem.

I just wanted to post here and see if anyone can make some suggestions that I can throw at the service department. They already got HD involved but obviously nothing has worked.

They did get it to work for 30 miles so something changed. We're all baffled.

Anyone?????

I would have them check the cables and connectors for intermittent fault. When the cruise module went bad, did they bench test it to see if it was really dead?

There may also be infant mortality issues with the new cruise module (failure out of the box) which can happen if the part experienced ESD during manufacture.

I would have them check the cables again (with a meter) and put in a new cruise module; then troubleshoot from there.

At least you will know that you have a good working module and cables. From there, they need to check the throttle position sensor and ECU for faults.

It's unlikely that the handlebar switch failed since it is a simple analog device that either works or it don't. If that switch failed you would get no codes since the ECU don't query the handlebar switch for state. Ditto for the brake switch. Cruise would not activate and brake lights would fail to operate.

Hope this helps. If you call HD and can get a tech on the phone they might be able to help.

Thanks for the ideas. I'm leaning toward the throttle position sensor. 2 of the drop out codes were 242 - high rate of engine rpm change (e.g. hit ice or slipping tire). I was just cruising on the freeway when it kicked out so that code makes me wonder.

Anyway . . .thanks again.

I know they ruled out the brakes, but it still sounds like a brake issue. I had the same problem with
mine. It turned out the front brake lever was sticking.

They're picking up the bike today to take it back to their shop and mess with it again.

More to come on this continuing saga later . . .

a speed sensor failure will cause the following symptoms:
turn signals wont cancel
loss of volume level to engine rpm control(those that have radios)
speedometer fluctuation or loss of.
odometer failure
engine cuts off at low rpms.

I experienced all of these conditions in the middle of nowhere. talk about a scary situation. dealer could not reproduce fault since it came and went. happened again took back to dealer dealer checked fault code this time. replaced speed sensor. problem solved. hope this helps someone out there with the same indications.

my cruise just went on my 03 as well....Im not looking forward to having to track down this problem......Mine will do about the same it will set and then just out of no where go off...usually I can just reset it but then it will just keep doing that and then it will just not allow it to be set at all.
