Default Need some help with bulbs

I just bought a set of smoked lens covers for the front and rear from a guy that took them off his bike. He didn't include the bulbs so I need to know which ones to buy and where to get them. I would like to switch to LED bulbs but I am not sure if I have to do anything else to the bike to make them work so any help you guys can offer I would appreciate.

You need standard 1156 and 1157 Amber bulbs that you can buy at Wal Mart or Autozone. Can't help you with the LED version.

The bulb with two filaments (can't remember which number) should be installed in front as they are on constant as well as "flashing" when turn signal is on.

1156 - single element for the rear
1157 - dual element for front (running & turn)

I have red led's in the back of my bike with the turn/brake module. The led's seems to stay the same intensity no matter if I am on the brakes or not?

the 1156 are single filament and are typically installed in the rear signals unless he changed the light itself. The fronts are dual filament and are 1157 bulbs. LED replacements are available, but there is a good chance you will have to install a load equalizer if you do LED i both front and back. I have LED just on the rear of mine and NO load equalizer was necessary. If you are going to look into LEDs, most hear will suggest Radiantz or Dynamic Concepts.

+1 on the Radiantz LED's. If you go the led route, might as well ad a run/turn/brake controller too. If you do that, then you have to have red in the rear signals whether it be led or incandesent, (sp). I have the Badlands Illuminator (BadlandsMotorcycleProducts.com), and Radiantz led's front & rear, (Radiantz.com).

Ditto that. You need the amber bulbs to be legal...and visable...with amber to the front. The 1157's are dual filament for always on and flashing (turn). The wattage is nearly identical to stock bulbs. I think the stock bulbs were GE190s or similar that cost four times as much. Some problems reported with the LED's pulling too much power and popping fuses...needing a load equalizer. Can't say if its worth it...the 1157's work fine.

Actually, LED's pull about 1/10th of the power that incandesent bulbs pull. The load equalizer is used because the led's don't pull enough power to activate you flasher. So, the led's are brighter, last longer and use less power - no downside.

Thanks for the info guys. I will stick with regular bulbs and stay away from LED for now. I do have the adapter that lights up all three tail lights when the brakes are applied. It was installed on the bike when I purchased it.

Sgt Dave, I just went through turn signal/alarm system hell due to the Dealer mixing Kury Panacea run/brake/turn LED tail light with HD run/brake/turn Incandescent turn signals. Thankfully, Dealer did the right thing and credited me for the HD parts and made it right. This happened today actually.

Coincidentally, a few days before the electrical went haywire, I had been researching getting LED turn signals for front and rear. From all this, I learned a lot about LED's, load equalizers and alarm controllers.
Lest I put everyone to sleep with this new-found knowledge, I will offer up just a few tidbits of advice. If you have any more questions, feel free to PM me.

  • Kury is definitely most $$ and doesn't play well with others, particularly if you get their "Panacea" run/brake/turn set up.
  • Kury LED's (at least for my '09 RKC) come with the lens cover already attached. They don't have clear lenses...only red, amber and smoke.
  • Radiantz and Custom Dynamics are the only 2 I'd consider if I was doing it all over.
  • You need a load equalizer if you get rear lights that have a run/brake/turn setup.
  • If you have a HD alarm, get an alarm controller if you don't want the little alarm light on all the time.
