Default Andrews 26h cam or 103 upgrade

Dealer is offering the 103 upgrade for 1999+tax if i just did the andrews26 cam upgrade would that be enough to get a little boost in torque or is the 103 the best option.not a speed demon just like feeling the torque coming out ot 1st gear.thanks for the mechanical help not my field of expertise.

I did the Andrews 26 this past winter and like it a lot. They pull and cruise really good and I am very happy with the results. Iclick did the SE 255's which are similar to the 26's and he feels the same way about his results.

Having said that, I'm doing a big bore this next winter. I'm one of those people that can't leave anything alone, especially once I got a taste of that increased power/torque from the cams. If you have the cash, go for the big bore. I (and probably others) might recommend you shop around different places as you can typically get more bang for your buck with an indy. If you think you can just do the cams and leave it alone you should be pleased. But, remember the old saying..... No replacement for displacement.

Jamie at Fuel Moto told me the big-bore kit (103 upgrade) alone made only a small performance difference, a few HP & TQ, over the stock displacement. OTOH the 103 Stage 2 kit with SE255 cams will make a nice difference, primarily because of the cam upgrade--but that's irrelevant to your situation since you've already taken that step.

In his opinion it isn't worth the upgrade cost, and for $2K I certainly would pass on it. I would suspect that adding a +4° gear to your TW26 would bump your low-end as much or more compared to a 103 kit alone and would cost much less. It would do nothing for peak HP, however, if that is a concern--and would probably decrease it slightly.

My question to HP/TQ claims is "Where is your TQ peak and how well does it hold on the low-end compared to stock?" Only a dyno chart will tell for sure, but most aftermarket cams installed with no CR increase will hurt low-end TQ. It all depends on your priorities and where you want the power to come in--up high, down low, and somewhere in between? Few aftermarket cams will provide equal or higher TQ numbers in the low-end compared to stock without a CR increase.

So what CR pistons did you use in your build? A CR increase will boost the low-end but with the usual adverse side-effects revolving around detonation.

The 103 kit will give you an increase in tourque. But ANY engine is held back buy a conservative grind stock cam that is trying to strike a balance between performance, emissions, gas millage, engine life, etc. I'd do both. Hey wait....I did

I know these are stupid questioins, but what is CR, and is the gear you are talking about the gear driving the cam chain? I didn't know you could change that.

Not stupid questions at all. "CR" is compression ratio. The +4° gear is a replacement crank sprocket that advances the cam timing and gives the bike better low-end at the expense of some peak HP. Andrews ($51) and Wood ($125) both make these, but the latter must be made out of gold judging from the price difference.

I would think this would help the TW26 if improved low-end is a priority, but I would call Andrews and quiz them in detail about the pros and cons before tearing down and installing one.
