Default Exhaust Gasket Type

So I decided to pull off my BUB 7 True Dual system to install new exhaust gaskets. Mainly because when I installed them originally, I did not replace the original mesh-type gaskets and since installing the exhaust last summer, I have taken it off one other time in order to do some other mods.

Anyway, I stopped at the local dealer and asked for the SE exhaust gaskets. The woman at the parts counter brings out two gaskets that are non-mesh type and are more like a metal ring. I didn't really think anything of it and assumed they were correct. I get online last night and looked up the gaskets on HD's website. The gaskets they describe as the SE type look to be a mesh type gasket similar to the originals I took off, not the metal ring type that I purchased at the dealer.

I don't have the receipt with me as I am at work now, so I don't have the part number that she sold me, otherwise I would just check it. I'm just curious if I got the right thing or if the image online of the SE exhaust gaskets is incorrect.

Thanks. I'll need to return what they gave me and see if I can get the correct ones.

Yea take them back. You will need the oem gaskets. I already had some SE gaskets and installed mine then found out you were supposed to use OEM. I called BUB's tech line and they told me this so I would say there right. I took my pipes back off and installed the correct ones.

So you used the mesh type? What do the OEM type look like?
This is all new to me, so sorry for the questions.

Now this is what I call service! I emailed BUB and they replied within 5 minutes with my answer. They recommend the OEM tapered woven mesh style gaskets. So, back to the dealer to get the right ones. Wish me luck!

Default Interesting....

Ok, it's 1:30am and I just got in from wrenching on the bike for a few hours...after wife and daughter went to bed of course.

So, I ended up going back to the dealer with the metal rings they sold me last night. First, I was cheesed at the guy, he says, "whatya need?" No hi, how's it goin, just too the point I guess. I said the women last night sold me these exhaust gaskets, but I'm not sure they are the right ones. He asks what brand of pipes, I say, BUB True Duals. He says, "we put this type (referring to the metal ring, non-mesh type that they sold me the night before) of gasket on all our exhaust modifications." I pull out the email I got from the tech at BUB this afternoon and show him that they recommended the OEM style tapered mesh type gasket. He says...mmmmm.

So, he pouts his way to the parts room to get the gaskets, then comes and drops the gaskets on the counter. I pay the $3 difference and head out without thanking him. It's this type of service that just ticks me off....that is why I didn't by either of my bikes from this local dealer and instead drove 75 miles to Rochester, MN. Great service, great people, great all around dealership!

Anyway, they fit nice and snug, I reinstalled the headers and mufflers and gave the bike a quick detailing....good time with no exhaust or saddlebags.

So, tomorrow morning I will fire it up and see what I have done.

Thanks for all your input everyone!

I plan to follow up with BUB and let them know that a dealership is installing their exhaust and not using the recommended gasket. I have no experience with this, so maybe they are all equals and do just as good as any others.
