Default Protecting painted hard bags

OK.. dumb question from a newbie to owning a bike with painted hard bags on my new yet to be delivered 2010 Road King.
I am used to traveling with soft leather saddlebags on my 96' FXDL and being able to strap leather coats that are not in use to the top of the saddlebags as they won't fit in them. I obviously can't do that on the Road King with the painted saddlebags unless they make a protective cover for trips. Where do you guys strap your leather coats or chaps when riding in climate that changes temps frequently enough that you need to bring them along for trips?
I know about the back rack over the fender that I am putting on the bike, but we always end up having to strap something to the tops of the leather bags.

Thanks guys
Ken

Check your cataloge, they will show a leather like lid cover for the hard bags. They also have a mini rack if your so inclined.

Harley sells some inexpensive vinyl covers to cover the top of the hard bags that might work for you. There are several other companys that make them too. Then there are the chrome racks that you can install if you don't mind drilling a few holes.

I can fit two sets of rain gear, two leather jackets, two sets of chaps,a couple of hats, gloves, and a few tools in my hard bags.

It's tight but fits!

Dawg, did you get the type with the top rolls? Just wondering if they're a good option. You can never have to much storage.

3M makes a clear adhesive that I used on my rocker panels on my Jeep. Never knew it was there unless you looked for it. Forget what it's called, but most automotive body shops carry it. May be another option if you want to strap to the lid.
