When you pull off of the interstate for a quick fill up in hot weather and have to make a hot start you will be glad that you have them.

My S&S 107 came with them and has just 9.5:1 CR, but I guess they built it to run with a stock starter. My 1990 starter is original and has no problems. But what is cheapest, a bigger starter or pulling the heads of and having releases fitted?

Something else you can do is put some heavy duty battery cables on with the short heavy ground also, I did and was told it makes a big difference.

Go with your instincts and get the compression releases installed.

Have them installed, it is good insurance. My 120 has about 35k miles on it and before that the engine was a very high performance 103. Still have the original stock starter and cables, no issues.

BTW, do not worry about reliability with a 10.1 or even a 10.5:1 engine. As long as it is built and tuned correctly, it will last a long, long time.

I’ve had the starter replaced twice (under warranty) in 50,000 miles and I have a stock 2008.

Thats another question i have. The automatic c/r how do they work on a bike that never had them,Is there a kit or wiring? I really cant see me remembering to push the manual ones.I guess another option is a high torque starter.

I rode about 5000 miles on my 2007 FLHP before I had the dealer do the service bulletin to install ACR's. Before the ACRs were installed the starter would have a difficult time turning over the engine on hot starts. After ACR's it turns over the same no matter what the conditions. I would have the ACR's while you're there.

S&S has some new cams out with built-in comp releases, like the V-rod uses. Maybe he is using those.

I like that your mechanic is trying to save you money. However, I think its a good idea to look ahead. Even you might not need them with the cams you have, at some poiint, you might want to put in different cams. The manual CR's are trouble free, relatively inexpensive, and it's not all that difficult to re-train yourself to use them.
