Forget the whips.
The best antenna I've had where the ones someone here suggested from Freedom Cycles in Reno NV. They worked great. After my accident, I'm in need of a new set. I just put on the Harley Shorty's and to be honest, the reception with these things is really horrible!
Going out to Freedom Cycles and looking for the antenna, they now redirect me to
Yuli Brothers... The two antenna (AM/FM and CB) are listed for 89.00 on the site, but it looks like no way to purchase? I'm waiting to hear back from them.
In the mean time, I'm looking for a very good antenna that is at least as good as the ones I just described if not better?
The info@ email bounces back "undeliverable". And they are closed on Monday.
I'd just order it, but there doesn't seem to be a way to order on-line?
I'll call them Tuesday (not open today).
Before anyone flames me, let me point out that I have a master's degree in electrical enginering, and I know what I am talking about. Having said that, I will point out that "longer is better," and that applies to antennas as well as other things. You can use almost any length of receiving antenna, and the results will depend on the proximity of the station you are receiving. If you cut the existing antennas down, as suggested by lipster, you will screw up the CB transmission. Depending on the resulting SWR, you might actually damage the CB transmitter. Short, maunufactured CB antennas are matched to the CB transmitter and will work, but not as well as longer antennas.
I just did it this week, 21" and see no difference yet.
I haven't tried the CB because I never use it anyway,
we'll see!
Ted is correct about the SWRs though so you may want to purchase
an antenna for the CB..
Go ahead, cut em'! haha
Have you ever looked at the antennas on EGLIDEGOODIES.COM, i purchased one from them a few years ago, but i snapped it off. Now they make a shorty that has a spring at the bottom so you cant snap it off when you open the tour pak lid.... Dont know if you have tried them, they seemed a lot cheaper than 89 bucks though...
i think you should hook a 102" steel to it, wouldn't that be a hoot. Dont forget the power mike. :-)
I've wondered about the transmit side and what the SWR were running. I don't hear squat out of my CB, nor does it seem to transmit too well. I'll have to check out eglidegoodies and see what they have. the web site is down right now.
