My understanding is the top engine mount was moved on 08 models, which on earlier bikes will get in the way. I have been watching ebay and undamaged 6 gall tanks are going for around 100 bucks - if the start price is higher they generally don't sell. So I am thinking of buying one just to see what needs to be done, but that won't be for a while.

JP Cycles does a large tank for $200 and there are custom tanks available from Daytec, FatKatz and RWD, but they are all in the $1200 region. The FatKatz claims to be 7 gallons, which is a significant 40% increase over stock for pre-08 bikes and looks good!

In all the years I have owned my 1990 FLHS the first time I ever prayed for a gas station was when my wife and I shipped it back to the States for the Centenary in 2003, travelling West from Chicago through the wilds of Iowa. We were on reserve and running on fumes!

i too have wondered about this for long trips but due to cost and minimal long trips it may be easier to find a small accesory gas can to strap on if your doing a long trip. just a thought. =) but this is a cool thread and a great idea and thanks for creating it i will be keeping my eye on this one.

It would be easier to stretch your stock tank. My friend did that this winter and now has a 7 1/2 gallon tank.

Default 5 to 6 gallon tank

Ok, I have done this mod on my 07 ultra. went to a 08 streetglide. You will need to remove the old seat and tank. Cut the box beam on the top of the frame to funnel the wire harness on both sides of the new tank. I cut the plastic shroud away on the top and then split the harness in two equal shares and wrapped them with premium elec tape and wire tied them. I reinserted the box beam top, upside down and rewelded back together first. then did the wire harness. next I welded two 1 1/4 inch by 3/16 bolts to the frame to fasten the rear of the new tank. Top engine mount does not need to be relocated, but does need to drop down 1/2 inch for clearance. I did this by making a new upper horn bracket with very liitle arch and then ground down the himes joint to get the clearance I needed. cut and fit until I got the tank to fit with about 3/16 clearance from the tank to the himes joint. It took me about 2 hours total time to do this and have put on thousands of miles since.
I have pic's if you need them. e-mail me at rwreynolds@live.com hope this helps you.

P.S. you also have to change the seat as the front mount tab is different. I went to a sundowner, much better than the stock ultra 07 seat. Hope this helps you.

Default 5 to 6 gal

$982 for a tank ready to paint??? Are you nuts? when you can upgrade to a 08 tank for a couple hundred and get a better seat in the mix? total out of pocket of $600 sure beats $982 plus paint any day!

You can buy a sound 08 or later tank on ebay for around a hundred bucks. They don't go for much more. Add matching paint and you are even more in pocket!

It would be great to hear from someone who has actually adapted an 08 later tank to an earlier bike!
