Default Can I put a 6 gallon tank on a 5 gallon touring bike?

I am sure there are a few of you that have thought of this.. I have a 2001 Road Glide with the standard 5 gallon tank.. I want to replace it with a newer 6 gallon tank.. I do know that there are differences in the top fuel access cutout section etc. some being round and some being oblong.. Also I suspect the mounting studs etc. on the bottom are / will be different.

BUT.... Just maybe there is someone out there that has already figured this out..??? thx

Interesting question - i suspect it can be done as the 08s got the 6 gallon on the old frame...

I have searched this and believe there is a few posts on it as well. The easy answer is no it wont just bolt on. You can get it to fit but there will be some mount changes and engine mount relocations that will need to be made to get one to fit. If you have the time, resources and/or Money go for it.

I am not aware of any aftermarket company that provides a bolt on 6 gallon tank either.

I seem to recall something about a mounting boss on the heads that changed in 08. Can't remember just off the top of my head, but I thought you'd need to change seat, heads, and do some fabrication on the frame. So, yeah, it can be done.

When I went cross country on my old Ultra with the 5 gallon fuel tank, I could just go 125 miles before I needed to find a station. The most I could go was 150 miles.

Last year when I went on my trip on my new 2009 Road Glide with the 6 gallon fuel tank, I got 200 miles before I needed fuel. One time I went 250 miles before I found a station. I took 5.7 gallons to refuel the tank.

It is great to have the 6 gallon fuel tank.

Russ wernimont RWD .....makes a stretched 6 gallon tank that will bolt up with no fabrication and it looks $weet but costs like $1200
