Default New Guy with 1K Service Question

New guy with a maintenance question.

Last year I sold my Night Train which I had serviced at the dealer for both the 1K and 5K service. Over the winter I traded it in for a 2010 SG and have decided to save some $ and do the maintenance my self since I was quoted $420 from the dealer.

I have purchased the Service Manual and have performed the oil change but have a question about the clutch adjustment. The manual states to Check the Clutch...... I am familiar with adjusting the clutch but for the 1K maintenance should I be removing the clutch release cover on the right side to inspect also? Or do I only need to remove the Primary cover which I'll be adjusting and refilling from?

$420 seems on the high side.

Here in the UK the first 1k service is included in the sale price - just take it and get it done! Is it different in the US?

It isn't included unless it's negotiated in the purchase deal.

I did all the service myself i bought my bike new and been keeping up with fluids and inspections without a hitch the dealers prices are very steep but there is something about someone else working on my bike just doesn't sit well with me.

Here's a link to a video that should answer your question for adjusting the cable and clutch pack.

Clutch adjustment is a must-do at 1k.

$420 is steep, shop it around if you want a dealer to do it.

It's not very often that something costs less in Canada than in the USA.But the first service is around $320 up here.

I agree that 420.00 is pretty high. 1000 mile service was included in my purchase with no negotiation. If you can change the oil, you can do the 1000 mile service yourself..would suggest invesing in a torque wrench.

if you like the way your clutch is working, leave it alone. if you don't like it, adjust it. just because the service manual says to adjust the clutch doesn't mean you have to.
