Hello,
I just returned from a 1500 mile trip since installing my TW6-6 cams. I am very happy with the performance and manners of my '07 Road King but I am experiencing some excessive pinging. Mostly when I'm traveling up a grade and accelerateing. I was traveling light and alone so i did not have the bike loaded down at all. Is this something that needs to be corrected with the use of a dyno?
So, you had cams done, but no dyno? Are you running a canned map?
I ran a canned map, but when I had the bike actually dyno's the tuner took out a bit of the timing to almost eliminate any pinging, and the bike ran much smoother afterwards.
I can still "make" the bike do it under the circumstances you describe, but it's really got to be where I am in too tall a gear for what I'm doing; i.e. I really should have downshifted to get the load on the engine into the correct rpm range. I believe you can "make" a totally stock bike do it the same way.
Yes, you are correct. I am running a map supplied to me by Kieth/Jamie at FuelMoto. The bike runs great with the exception of the pinging. I have never had a problem with any map ever supplied to me by FuelMoto but I too believe that you can not beat a custom tune with any supplied map. I havn't dyno'd it yet because I don't believe I am done with the build. There's a pretty good chance I'm going to install FM's 107" kit in the very near future. And once I'm happy with everything (intake, comp, displace, cams, EFI and exhaust), I'll have it dyno tuned and dialed in.
Thanks for your response
Obviously, there shouldn't be any pinging at all. Have you called Jamie and asked for some help? Chances are a bit of a tweak on your current map will fix it.
Look at your ignition tables. Take a couple degrees of timing out from 1800 rpm or so starting at 20% throttle across the table on BOTH cylinders. Worked on my 07.
