You're doing it right and not hurting anything. Don't let the motor lug.

Im still breaking mine in (700) miles, I shift around 3 grand and can cruise all day at 60 in 6th without lugging it. I live on flat ground so I dont think it hurts it. I cant wait to get back so I can see what 4500-5000 feels like, have not gone over 4000 with it so far and the time I pushed it some, it wanted to scat. I am amazed at the power of the 103 compared to my 06 1200, I always thought that it was fast and would leave a geezer glide but now that I own one, my glide aint no slouch and its bone stock so far.

I never watch the tach, it's all done by sound & feel.

Default Old thread i know

My 2007 Road King absolutely LOVES 4th gear! I can get huge range. Third is nice too! Around Maine if you are not on the highway, most routes are 45 - 55 MPH. If I am rolling on throttle a little harder than usual, I do sometimes, I shift from 3rd to fourth around 40-ish. Then 4th purrs like a kitten up to 60-ish nicely. No tach, I go by what she is singing to me. 2007 RK 96/6

13 year old thread about when to shift. Never understood why shifting was such a mystery...

Most harley riders shift points are based on how loud of exhaust they have.
