Sumping ???

I see that this is a pretty old thread, but I am going to resurrect it. I have a 1991 Springer. If I don't ride it for a couple of weeks and start it up, about 8 oz. of oil will come out the air cleaner. I have learned that I can disconnect the line that goes from the crank case to the air cleaner, hook a hose to it and let it drain into a jar when I start the bike. It's way less messy. I had posted a question on this several years ago and was told that it was a check ball that was bad, loose or something. I don't remember where this check ball is suppose to be. Can anyone refresh my memory? Thanks.

The way to check for sumping is to ride the bike, get the engine up to operating temps and then, per Dawg's post, pull the crank case drain plug and see how much oil comes out. I have seen nearly a quart come out of a sumping engine but 4-6 ounces is normal. Be careful R/Ring the crankcase drain plug. It's an NPT plug and being tapered can crack a case if over tightened.
