nah, it's the full 12 volts. check to see if there is voltage from the center pole to ground. if so, you're good. if you have continuity from the center pole to ground, then it is hooked up backwards.

Might burn it up. Those lighters get hot.

the only problem i had was i blew a fuse once when I tiurned my bars all the way to the left, the plug hit the tank and the fuse blew. Replaced the fuse and no problems.

The reason the manual says not to use it for powering accessories is because when you hit the starter button the 'back e.m.f.' or voltage spikes you get from the cranking starter can grossly exceed your electronic devices ability to absorb those high voltage hits. This is why your Harmon Kardon stereo is deliberately delayed at turn on for example, and also why a lot of people fry some direct wired after-market amplifiers. You could wire in an appropriate MOV or metal oxide varistor at the cigarette plug if you wanted to protect your equipment from transient voltage spikes. This is also why you should shut off all electronics when jump starting a dead car too.

ya I think they could either relax this or modify the wording. If you planned on charging your car from there I agree its a bad idea...but with today's technology, just use a little common sense and you'll be fine. Only thing you want to be careful of is if you remove the lighter to often it might just loosen up the prongs and then it will fall out riding down the road somewhere...keep an eye on that and make sure it stays snug.

While it can handle the voltage, a tight left turn will most likely cause the charger to contact the tank. I wired up a flat 90 degree power connctor with a short extention. An easier way is to use thse outlets.

or get a road glide. then you don't have to worry about the fairing turning and hitting the tank.
