I've done Big Ben twice, I just got Back from the latest one just last month.
Terlingua (ghost town) is quite an experience in itself and I stayed at La Pasada Milagro. Make no mistake this is outlaw country and is as dangerous as a rattle snake! It's rugged beautiful country and is an experience one should have. Read the book "Drug Lord", it will give you some perspective on the activities and the history in this part of the country. It's harmless if you mind your own buisness. Presidio is where you don't want to hang out.
Don't pass a gas station either, you will regret it! I love going to Alpine, Ft. Davis, Marfa, Terlingua, Big Ben and Marathon. The river road (170) is a must see (Rio Grande) and is one of the top senic sites in Texas.
Here's some pictures also.
I'm standing on the Rio Grande looking into mexico and yea they can just walk right across and even sleep in these cottages we came upon (old movie set) 40miles from anywhere.
