Default Upgrade 2012 Ltd tunes

I recently purchased a 2012 Limited that I am looking forward to putting many, many miles on. I would like to upgrade the factory stereo system. I am NOT a radio techie. I am looking for a plug and play system upgrade and have been ckecking out the Hogtunes Big Ultra kit. What does everyone think of this system? Are there other plug and play kits that are better for the money spent? Please help someone that doesn't really know what to buy. Are these easy installs?

You will have many different opinions, and all are good...I upgraded to the BoomAudio in all 4 corners and it was a great upgrade for the $.

Start with speakers. Lots of choices. I use the J&M units front and back. That may do it for you, depending upon how much of an audio purest you might be. They, as the stockers, are made in China. But they sound tons better than the stock speakers. Then you have the HD Boom speakers, an upgrade for sure but I have no experience with them. There are other speakers out there to think about as well, so take your time.

Some guys like to add an audio amplifier to boost the "bass" response and have higher volumes without distortion. Some speakers perform better with an amp than others. So if you think an amp is in your future, it may need to be married to the correct speaker...from an impedance and from power handling standpoint. Some amps can fit under the faring, some have to go elsewhere (tour pak or bags...neither a good option if you are a regular tourer).

Replacement of the rear speakers is a quick piece of cake. Replacement of the front speakers involves removal of the outer faring (4 screws plus the 3 windshield screws). Removing the faring is a simple process. Remember to put a wool sock over each of your running lamps so the faring does not get scratched during removal/install. After the screws are all out, you will need to unplug the plug from the rear of the headlight. Then work the faring off. Take your time. It's easy, just never get in a hurry.

Good luck. You can do it. And consider getting a service manual to help you out with all of this kind of stuff.

I am looking at the Hogtunes Big Ultra kit because it comes with a 4 channel amp and 4 upgrade speakers that are all matched with each other and the radio. Seems to be a good way to go, but I'm just wondering if anyone has used this kit and what their thoughts on it are.

What is it that you want from the new stereo that the current does not do? If you just want more volume, you can add speaker lids to the rear bags and speakers in the glove boxes in the lowers too. If you want XM and MP3's you can get the Zumo 665 and wire that into the system and have a great GPS too. Most of the aftermarket systems lose the intercom and CB functions as well as some of the built in functionality with the factory button set ups.

For what its worth I just upgraded my '10 FLHTC speakers to Boom audio. Wanted better sound without getting crazy. No particular reason for going with boom other than at the dealer and they had them in stock. After getting over the fear of taking the fairing off the install was super easy, true plug and play in about 30 minutes, and the difference in sound quality was amazing. Whatever you decide search on here for install tips, these guys are pretty good at walking people less gifted through these jobs

I am still undecided on which sytem to purchase. I have narrowed it down to either the Hogtunes Big Ultra kit or the Yaffe/Rockord Fosgate system. The Rockford amp is 300x4 and the Hogtunes amp is 160x4. The Hogtune system is completely plug and play and My concern is whether the Hogtunes amp is enough for highway speeds? Does anyone have experience with either of these systems. Also is the Rockford Fosgate system completely plug and play? I am no audio techie. My goal is to have a good sounding system that I can actually hear at 80mph. thanks...
