Default Setting the PIN for the security system

I just read a post that reminded me of this. When i bought the bike I think I remember the salesman asking me for a PIN for the security (4 digit) but I read in the owners manual that it has to be 5.
It also seems to be somewhat confusing by reading in the owners manual.
Is there a simpler way to do it? or could someone put it in laymans terms?
Maybe just start over, erease the old PIN if in fact he did add one and enter a new one?

it really isn't that difficult. the big thing to remember is you have to be kinda quick, and don't move the bike when you do it.

to check your current pin:

with fob present (wont work otherwise )....
turn your ignition, on, off, on, off, on
press left turn signal switch 3 times
press right turn signal switch 1 time

your current code will be displayed in the odometer. at this point, if you want to change it, then you use your left turn signal switch to cycle through the digits. if you accidentally pass your desired digit, don't worry, just keep hitting the switch till it comes back around. the right turn signal switch is like the 'enter' button. it will select that digit and move to the next position. after you get all 5 set, just turn the ignition off

also, it isn't a bad idea to practice using the pin a few times until you get it down pat. nothing like the frustration of not being able to enter your pin when you really need it.

I have heard these stories of folks traveling on the road...leaving the key bob at a hotel. It is close enough to crank and let them get gone but at the first stop for fuel...they realize the bike won't crank and they do not know the procedure to get it cranked.
I have a deathly fear of loosing that big round key bob thing. I have studied the procedure and took the card that is in back of the owners manual and put it in my wallet...
I also carry the key/Key bob thing around my neck on a lanyard under my shirt.
It is gonna happen to me...since I am so focused on it...

One thing to keep in mind, you don't even have to bother finding out what the dealer set PIN is, just go ahead and set an new one you can remember. Then, like said above, practice disarming the system once in a while. The chances are higher that the battery in the FOB will fail at some inconvenient time, than actually loosing the FOB. For convenience, my son and I use the same number on our bikes.

That app came in handy for me last week. I went to a friends house to bs. When I was leaving the alarm kept going off and I couldn't figure out why at first. Then I realized the key fob battery had died. Luckily I had the app in my phone and it got me on the right path to get the bike started....I just had to remember the darn code (which I did). Since then I have been reminding all of my friends to check their codes. Half didnt know and had the factory code in their bikes.
