Just to verify: The clacking didn't start till after you turned the bike off? Yes, that is normal.

Lots of metal can end up coming out of your initial oil change. The sooner you get that stuff out of the system the better IMO. Some can get through the oil filter, and if there is too much can clog that oil filter a bit. Besides that, most people move to synthetic and the sooner the better on that. I canged mine to SYN 3 about 500. I told myself I would investigate better synthetics when I was out of warranty but at 25K haven't yet. Yes, yes, yes, I know that you don't have to use factory oil to keep warranty but it takes an excuse away from the Service department that I'd have to prove them wrong on.

Lastly, if you do feel you really have a problem, and the dealer didn't do the upgrades, then I would switch everything back to stock b4 taking it in for service. Right or wrong, you gotta take away any excuse they can come up with to not help you.

I've owned 3 bikes that I bought brand new, two metric rockets and a sportster. Changed oil at 500 miles on all three, and from what the oil looked like, I cant believe anyone would go to 1k before changing the oil. All the metal from engine brake-in hanging out in my oil? but maybe i'm just a little ****...

Ugh

No your not
And I can't believe people would go 1K miles before the first oil change. They have no idea of the metal "floating" around in their oil on breakin.

I change the oil on new motors @ 100 miles, 500 miles, 1000 miles, 3000 miles and then every 3000 miles there after. And I use good synthetic oil after breakin. This is what I do on my race motors and I just follow thru with my Harleys

Race motors take way more punishment than motors used normally and must be service more often. So yeah, that schedule on a daily driver is very ****. Not that there is anything wrong with that. Just unnecessary.

Damn, now you are getting me nervous...... I waited until 1,000 to do my first oil change. When do these problems start to show up? I have 138,000 on my 07 and need to know when to expect her to blow because of that screw up!!!!!

I wish I lived around some of you guys that change oil as often as I change underwear. I would get your used oil and run it for 4 or 5,000 more miles!

But, the main thing is, you bike, your maintenance. If it gives you that warm fuzzy feeling that is all that counts.

Not to hi-jack the thread-

On my new 2011 RKC I did 500/1000 miles, I used the scavenger oil change on my 1000 mile oil change and used Mobil-1 20-50 V-Twin. http://www.roguechopper.com/

Interesting note- went to tech seminar Q/A at HD dealership. Tech said that there was not that much dirty oil left in bike when oil change is done.
