Never new what I was missing!!
Well I took my buddy's RK for a ride today as he had mid-apes installed. Well Sir, I have never ridden something SO comfortable... My bike is going in Monday for service and new bars!!
When I sit on any bike (and, OBTW, I've been doing that for over 50 years now), I just stretch out my forearms and try to place my hands on the grips. If I have to reach down, or up, to get to the grips, it feels totally unnatural, and I'm not going to be comfortable, regardless of how it "looks" (which is what I think "apes" are about in the first place).
To me, it's about comfort and control, and if the reach isn't normal, important aspects of comfort and control are missing.
Never understood the mindset.

An incorrect assumption, apes were first and foremost a comfort mod for me, and from most posts that I see, nobody suffers tall bars in order to look good.

In my 40+ years of riding I have never understood apes either? I did pick up RK cheap with 16" apes about a year ago. I don't hate them as much as I thought I would? They aren't real comfortable and control does suffer but they ain't awful and they do look kind'a bad *** if that's what you're going for. I'd never pay to have them though.
I've been riding for almost 30 years and maybe I'm getting too old to understand but I can't quite see apes on a touring bike visually appealing or comfortable. Some guys around here have apes so high it looks like they're sky diving they're so spread out! Lots of guys love em though and if it works for them great. I just can't visualize a 500 mile day with the blood rushing out of my arms the whole time.
