Hot Riding
OK guys or gals, it has just been hot here in WI lately, 90's or warmer days in a row. I know, some of you get this weather all the time!! We don't and to me it is brutal riding in it. Just not used to it!! Well I went on about a 5 hour ride yesterday and by the time I got back my a$$ had heat blisters on it... My a$$ and warm leather do not get along. I refuse to buy a car with leather seats... So my question is how do you ride on these brutal warm days and avoid things like this. I know the HD shop sells these breathable mesh pads for your bike. Have any of you used them? Are they worth the money? We are only in July and Thur - ?? is suppose to be in the 90's again.
Ya, with the heat index it been in the 100's here a few days as well... We normally do not get long stretches like this. We are setting records here of the number of 90+ days in a row of all time. I think we are close now to beating the 2nd place run... Anyway, it sucks, but if I can't ride my bike without getting heat blisters on my a$$, then I will need to find something to occupy the time I would normally spend on my bike. There has to be something. If it was 110-120 heat index here, I wouldn't even step outside.!
I just rode from Los Angeles to Cleveland last week (July 2nd through 6th). I do this ride almost every summer and let me tell you this ride this year was the most brutal I've ever encountered as far as temperatures go. I expect the high temperatures when leaving CA through the desert but typically once through the desert it's smooth sailing. Not this year! Temperatures were at or near 100 everyday all the way. And smothering humidity on top of it. It's the first time in many trips that I didn't wear my jacket once. If I had to plan it all over again knowing what I know now, I'd plan to ride at night and sleep during the day.
As for the OPs question regarding the air circulator pads - yes they help. I have a wooden bead seat pad that I use and it definitely helps with some airflow to your butt. Still hot, but a definite improvement.

If it was in the 90's in 'Bama I would have to put on a sweater or light jacket.
I bought one of those wooden roller automotive seat covers from Walmart and cut it down to fit my Road King. I actually made two of them from one cover. Cost me about $15. The airflow under your pants feels funny but it works great.

It will be 112° in Phoenix today. When it's that hot out, asphalt temps approach 175°. Riding ceases to be enjoyable, which is why I don't normally ride when it's above 110°, which is about 25 days each year. I've never had heat blisters on my backside, so I can't tell you what to do.
I haven't used the pads but have had a couple of the guys I know say they work well.
Try under armor underwear and some powder on your **** and your junk. I use baby powder or gold bond, but have heard good things about monkey butt powder. It will help. I have been riding everyday on a cop bike for 10 hours a day and did a 16 hour day on the 4th at 106 degrees, wearing the monkey suit and body armor. It has been 100-108 here in for the last 10 days. Also take frequent breaks and drink plenty of fluids (water and gatorade).
