I'm running with just the air filter insert on top of a K&N filter. (2nd bike doing so) No problems. Also have S/E slip ons. More air in and more air out means more power!

I've been running the open air cleaner on mine for over a year, with no problems at all. The only thing to be careful with is if your bike is parked outside during a rain storm. The filter will get wet, and the oil will drip down onto the cam cover. Also while washing the bike, you'll need to put a cover over the air filter to protect it.

I am running a SE aircleaner with no football cover. I am using a Screamin Eagle aircleaner insert and it to me it looks really good. I like having something a bit different and around here, no one else is doing it. I haven't had any problems yet and don't reallu forsee any. The only issue I could imagine would be rain but I haven't logged much time in the rain with my open set up. A little rain though hasn't given me any trouble.

That's the S/E insert on my bike in my signature. Sorry, no closeups.

I know plenty of people that have done this starting back in 99-00. No problems. Another trick for the tigha$$@$. Find a music CD or DVD with a cool face. The side that plays, with no markings. Itmight need a washer to take up some space in the center were the a/c bolt is. Fits perfect and gives a very trick look with reflections. you will have to replace often due to scratches but it's something different.

HDJOE88... Can you describe your air intake some more? I'm like the round look rather than the 'football' look. But can't find what cover you used or whats under it.
