So, I know I've read that there are "GPS analyzed" routes to do rides like this, i.e. 48 states in shortest route, etc.

How did you plan this out? Did you find an already established route?

I started out with the Motorcycle Tourer's Forum maps and then made small adjustments to include the Tail of the dragon and a few other things.

Here is some good info and sample routes:

It's a shame to make it to Durango, CO and not head the few miles more to ride the 'million dollar highway'...but after that many miles logged in all 48, mission accomplished!

I'm actually a bit surprised that clocking that many miles and trying to get caught up after a few delays, that there weren't any run-ins with the law (e.g. speeding tickets).

I looked through the ride summary but didn't catch the grand total: gas, food, lodging & repairs/ maintenance (misc.) $$?

Great write up, thanks!

Congrats on Ride - I spent the 60's in Austin and still go back for High school re-unions. I did my first IB 1500 BB in 36 hours on my 61st birthday. Did my only other IB (National Parks) in 2013 (We did 65 National Parks/National monuments) in 26 days (8100 miles) and in (26 states) rules say at least 50 NP/NM in one year.. Great Ride..
Lanier high school - class of 68

For those of you that think age is a factor - if your ever in VA - Look John Schuster - age today 83 - did the 4 Corners And the next year did the Criss Cross Then the next day did the 3 flags ride then the next day rode back to VA from Vancouver, Canada all at the age of 80.... My Hero for sure...

John has been a fixture on the www.rftw.org for several years. Will ride again this coming May -- fist ride from VA to Calif - then join the group and ride back to DC..
