Need help with radio software upgrade
I just took delivery of my 2014 ultra classic with the optional boom 6.5 radio last week. I asked when I took delivery if the stereo had the latest update and they said yes. Well, yesterday I went riding and heard the pop crackling while listening to fm. I checked the software and found I had version 1.17.1.1. So I followed the instructions and downloaded the new version 1.17.1.4 from hd website. I saved it to my desktop and then dragged and dropped the file onto a fresh 16 gb flashdrive. Well, every time I try this flashdrive in the radio, a message appears that says " no playable media found". What did I do wrong? I would bring it back to the dealer but I want to learn how to do it myself so I'll be ready for the next upgrade.
1. Verify your audio system’s current software version.
a. Select the following display menu items: “Home/Set-up/System Information/ Software Version”.
b. Record the software version.
c. Compare your audio system’s software version with the latest version available
on this page.
d. If the software versions are the same, you have the latest software available
and there is no need to update. If a higher level software level is available on harley-davidson.com, continue to update your audio system.
NOTE: Do not interrupt the installation process. Leave the vehicle and radio turned on, and keep the USB flash drive installed until the installation process is complete.
2. Download the latest software version from harley-davidson.com
a. Select “Download Software Update” for the appropriate audio system.
b. When prompted, save the compressed file to your computer desktop.
c. When the download is complete, copy the file within the zipped folder to the
root directory (the first or top most directory in a file system) of a USB flash
drive that is 8 GB or larger.
d. Turn your vehicle’s ignition switch to ACCESSORY. (Keyless ignition vehicles:
press and hold the trip switch for more than two seconds).
e. Turn on the audio system and connect the USB flash drive to the audio
system’s USB port.
f. The audio system will detect the new software available and ask if you want
to update. Select “Yes”. The display will prompt you to remove the USB drive when the update is complete.
NOTE: If the incorrect software file for your audio system is copied to the USB flash drive, and connected to the audio system’s USB port, the following error message will result: “The ISO image on the attached USB is corrupted or incompatible”.

Do you have a win zip program. I tried it for several times & finally someone stated I had to have a program to un-zip the file. I installed a program to un-zip files. After that it worked.
Do a search for "Boombox 6.5 Software Update". It has about 27 pages but is very informative. Worked for me.
Good luck.

I had the same issue myself, and the step I missed was to not unzip the file once it downloaded to my laptop. After I unzipped the file, I copied it to the thumb drive, plugged it in and it recognized the upgrade and went smoothly.
Not sure why they specify an 8 Gig drive, maybe they need some space on the thumb drive to write files to during the upgrade process.

FYI,
on my windows 'xp' computer, just moving the downloaded file first to your computer desktop (which comes as a zipped file), to my flashdrive unzips it.
I don't know if all are computers are like this but mine is.
So:
1. download to your computer desktop ( its zipped)
2. move ( drag via windows explorer) to flash drive ( automatically unzips it)
3. Take flash drive to usb 11 infotainment.
