Mobil 1 15W-50 (the car stuff) in the engine
Mobil 1 75W-90 gear lube in the tranny
Formula, 10W-30/40, whatever is handy in the chain case (not too particular here)

I want to change to Synthetic oils.Does anyone use Amsoil over harley brands? whats your take on oil brands for all 3 compartments.
I'm always amused by these oil threads and the people who claim "My oil is best," usually without evidence or evidence that is provided by their favorite oil maker. The reality is that there are a number of fine synthetic products on the market--including Amsoil, Mobil1, Royal Purple, Redline, etc.--and my advice is to find one that meets two criteria: price and availability. For most, for engine oil Mobil1 15w50 will win out, as you can buy it in almost any auto-parts store or Walmart in the country for about $5/qt. Before someone yells out that I'm touting my oil of choice, I don't use M1, but wouldn't hesitate putting it in any of my vehicles. All of the above and unnamed others will protect your bike probably far longer than you'll own it. I put 106k on my '96 RK, and the heads were never off that bike. Its compression was 158/158, used no more oil than in 1997, and ran perfect when I traded it in on Nov. 22, '07. Would another brand do better? Would the oil I used carry me to 200k? 300k? I don't know, but with this experience who cares? I dare say any might do as well.

Syn3? I've never seen a lab test on it, but at $8.50/qt. I believe you can do much better for the money. I say go elsewhere for your engine oil, and I would never put it in my tranny.

For tranny oil, consider using the same criteria, but select a synthetic hypoid gear oil (75w90 or higher). Engine oil may be fine, but I've always used gear oil in a manual tranny and won't stop without evidence that it is the wrong choice.

Primary oil doesn't require a high-tech product. Any cheap 10w30-20w50 fossil motor oil is fine. I used a 94¢/qt. off-brand 10w40 from Walmart in my '96 RK primary without any problems. IMO, using HD Formula+, reportedly a mundane 10w30 motor oil with a bit of EP added, is a waste of money at $6.50/qt. Some people use ATF and gear oil, and although either should work fine I think gear oil is overkill for that application.

What you say is true, but I disagree with the primary needing no special fluid. Anybody who has ever owned metrics with intergrated clutch and trannys can tell you that the wrong oil can ruin your clutch. The primary on a harley is no different being it is where your clutch lives. Use of any product not designated as wet clutch compatable can possibly cause you big issues.
Never fails to amaze me how a lot of people plop down 20K or better without blinking an eye then won't to put 50cent oil in it. By any good grade of of oil, change it every 3k and all is good, put a good grade cycle oil or formula + in the primary and change every other oil change along with the tranny fluid and your bike will last a long time.
