I change oil n filter every 3k....and its your $ and your investment...Pay now or pay later....Going by what service manual says works as well and have alot of friends that go by it to a T....Their sleds are fine.. This thread can go on as to why you should or should not, but bottom line your bike...your choice....If you choose to do it, to $#%@ with all the crap why you shouldn't..

I have a question for the people who are changing the fluids at intervals other than recommended by Harley. How do you determine what intervals you change your fluids . Do you have oil analysis done and base it on that, or do you choose a number that seems like a good one in your mind? 3000 miles seems to be a popular interval. Why?
I am not by any means trying to be a wise guy by asking, I was just wondering.

The 3k mile thing is an old carry over from when conventional oil used to break down and reach maximum dirt carrying capacity at 3k miles. This dates back to the 50s. 60s, & 70s. By the 1980s a lot of advances were made in both oil and filter technology. Viscosity testing has shown modern conventional oil is good conservatively out to 7k miles. Car and motorcycle manufactures for the most part have stayed on the conservative side of things because they are on the line with warranty work. Ford was at 5k forever and they finally moved to a 6k oil change interval a few years ago. Harley with the air cooled motors is staying at 5k so there is a good safety margin left in the oil's lubricating capacity and dirt carrying capacity. 3k with modern oil is just throwing your money out the window.
