Angry 1K Service - WOW What a Price Difference!

I am getting ready to have my 1K service done at a Harley dealership (I know I can do most of it myself but want the first one done right.) All of these are for the 1K service w/Synthetic oil:

Contacted the dealer I bought the bike from. They are 9 miles from me and they want $465.00 and not be able to get it in for 3 weeks.

Contacted the next closest dealer (15 miles) they want $345.00. Can get it in a couple of days.

Went by one other (89 miles), they want $300.00. Can get it in a couple of days.

I may have bought my bike from the one dealer but they sure as hell aren't getting any of my service work. going to go with the one 15 miles away because $45.00 is not worth a 180 miles trip. Thansk for letting me vent.

Dealers are a ripoff on service, dealership I bought mine from wanted 285 plus 74 an hour labor. I took it to local Indy that is reputable with local dealerships and it run me 206 out the door with synthetics. Salesman told me as long as I had receipts of work then I am still good for warranty.

I'd go with the $300 one & include it in a ride then after that do them yourself but keep your records / receipts

1000 mile service is very simple. Get a service manual, if you don't have the tools, buy what you need (make sure you have a 12 pt 10mm and ft-lb and in-lb forque wrenches, a belt tension gauge), get a good quality synthetic oil (I like Redline but it really doesn't matter), get a good quality synthetic grease for the steering neck, buy a k&n filter oil filter (has a nut on the end which makes it easy to change), o-rings, and a derby cover gasket, and you will still be under $300. Document what you do and save your receipts, there are several spreadsheets already made that you download and use to document. The next on will be a lot less because you are just buying engine oil and a filter. Oh yeah, a jack makes the job much easier and you will need it to do the swing test to check neck bearing adjustment but it will range 150-450. My advice is to go ahead and get a good one. I have a Sears yellow jack and wish I would have applied that cost to a better jack.

...and why do you think the dealer is going to "do it right"? I think its so simple and the pride in having it done right by yourself would be better invested than any money you are going to spend.

Sorry had to laugh at your comment " want the first one done right". What about the rest? For $300 you can get every thing you need to do them all yourself.

You can buy a jack, the correct size sockets (if you don't already have them), the service manual, AND the fluids needed and still come in cheaper than $300.00. That way you KNOW it's done right, because YOU did it and you are now equipped to handle it all yourself....and you learn a little something along the way. Its a win-win situation!! ;-)
