Default Road condition...

We are planning a major road trip which would include US 23 between Chillicothe, OH and Kingsport, TN. I've heard speeds are quite limited, but from a satelite view it appears as a typical four lane hiway. Has anybody ridden this road lately and provide some feed back. Thanks.

I have. Plan for extra time or carry more cash to pay the fine.

Going through Kentucky, you better be able to hang on tight... limit is 55, but you'll get run over by coal trucks at 65.

Going up the mountain out of Jenkins, KY at the Virginia border, stay in the left lane, there's an anomaly that often causes some nasty dips in the right lane in a couple of the curves.

In Virginia, watch your speed, five-o love that road, but it's an awesome hour... plan to stop just south of Wise/Norton at the turnout, awesome view. There are a couple of off-camber curves just south of Big Stone Gap.

All in all, great ride.

I lived 4.3 miles off 23 at the Kentucky/Virginia border for 5 years...... ran that road every day.

If you're looking for a GREAT road to ride, and I've mentioned it here a few times, let me know, I know a little side trip that is well worth it... maybe take an hour.

You will try to do the speed limit but you will get ran over by coal trucks speeding by, i did it last year from Dayton to the dragon and I would not do it again or recommend this to anyone JMO. It looks good on the map.
