Looking for police saddlebag inserts
#21
I've got the same problem and I don't think the ones from Owens are worth what they are charging. So far, I've got 2 ideas that I'm thinking of...
1. 1/8" aluminum diamond plate polished up a bit to make it look a bit better. The added thickness would help fill out the recess where the inserts go.
2. Some type of stone -- granite or slate probably since they have the more interesting colors. Travertine would be easy to work with, but is a bit more boring. Slate is very easy to work with, but granite would look a lot better.

I used Harley emblem #61777-63T with adapter kit #61771-91T as saddlebag inserts. These emblems were used on '63-'65 FL and XL models. The emblem shape is real close to that of the insert area; the leading edge is just about dead nuts on, the trailing edge is off just a bit.
I had to trim the top of the emblem just a bit to get it to fit, length of the emblem is exactly right. I also smoothed out the adapter as it has a slight curve in it to fit a fuel tank. The adapter is backed with 3M tape so no hole drilling was involved. The emblem also covers up all the pilot holes in the insert area.
I paid $45 for everything, including tax.
Here's a few pics....
I didn't care much for what's currently available in regards to inserts and this setup is relatively inexpensive and an easy mod to make.
