Try reving the motor to about 2,500 RPM when in reverse. This will help to keep the battery voltage up. For good measure, and save throwing $s at the problem. Have your battery load tested. If your engine starts well, it's probably not the battery...but it doesn't hurt to look at it. The battery delivers about 100 AMPs for a short period to start the engine. But, delivers about 50 Amps for a longer duration when in reverse.
Oh yeah...make sure your parking brake isn't engaged. I know this...
You should get the Trizglide supplement, if you are going to pull the reverse motor.

Two bolts, And a few wires to disconnect...I jacked the Trike up took of the right rear tire... Not hard at all... I had mine out at least 3 times, Twice i repaired it myself , And after going to 4 rebuilders i found one who would do it... He understood where the others didn't , That the reverse motor is an Hitachi motor. And not a starter motor, But a high toque Slow spinning motor... That rebuild lasted a year...And thats when i said enough is enough, And went Mechanical...

Frenchbiker was kind enough to provide me with this link, you can get your reverse motor gone over correctly for $350.

I like the reverse it's got now, and I've got another 3 years warranty on my '14 Tri Glide; and if anything happens after that, for the price of a mechanical reverse I can get it fixed three more times. If that doesn't last me for as long as I can ride this thing, I'll just take the hit on doing it again.
