I am looking at the end of the housing, as if I was looking toward the right rear tire.
The gear is turning clockwise from that direction, which will move the bike forward when it engages.
How do I get the motor to rotate the opposite direction??

I think we are playing with semantics here, looking left .. looking right, ETC'
If you cleaned and set the bushes in their clips properly , put the motor back in its only two bolts... And i'll bet it will work...

I decided to recheck everything so I took the unit back apart.
Everything looked correct.
When I put it back together, I tried rotating the motor can 180.
Got it back together, ran the test and -Voila !!, it rotates correctly now.
I'm reinstalling the unit and hope it works.
Thanks, Rhino2 and everyone else for all the information and suggestions.

I watched that video and the one that followed it about testing the unit.
The first one really isn't much help.
I'm just glad I got it fixed.
I went for a ride and tested it a couple of times.
Works great now and it didn't cost me anything but some cleaner, time and a couple of new bruises.
