Im not sure what bike you will be hauling but a 1" sheet of plywood does wonders.

I've got a Dodge Ram with a 6' 6" bed, and I've hauled my dresser in it many times without anything in it. My rear wheel sits right in the gap between the bed and the tailgate, so there's not much weight on the actual tailgate. If you're still concerned with it, as someone above posted, just throw a sheet of plywood in there, problem solved.

Go grab a wheel chock ($45) from Harbor Freight and secure it to a 3/4 inch piece of OSB plywood ($12). My Roadking bent the tailgate on my Dodge Ram without the plywood, as it sat just behind the gap.
