Metzeler 888 Tire Pressure - per Metzeler
I rode down to Daytona a couple of weeks back. Before that though I had to make 3 trips to my Indy to figure out why the front tire wasn't sealing at the rim correctly. (Loss of about 8 lbs in a week.)
After wire brushing on the second trip and still losing air, with a week til Daytona we fixed it by using silicon as a lubricant. It's been fine since.
When I saw the Metzeler booth at Destination Daytona I mentioned my sealing issues and the rep suggested that its possible that a tire may get out of the factory a little out of round. I could have / should have returned it for another, but since we fixed it, OK.
In the conversation about losing air, he asked me what tire pressures I run. I replied about 36-38 F / 40 R. That's when he explained that Metzeler recommends full max (as per what's embossed on the tire,) for both tires front and rear all the time, solo or two up. That seemed strange because my front tire rates at 42 psi while the rear is only 40 psi. When I told him that, he said he was aware of it.
I didn't do anything about it down in Daytona but I did a light service on the bike yesterday so I did up the pressure to max psi on both wheels. I only rode it for about 10 miles yesterday and though I expected it to ride like a truck, I'll admit that thus far I couldn't feel any difference. I'll leave the air in there and see what it handles like longer term.
I remember when the 880's came out and some of us were running mid to upper 40 psi in those tires. Metzeler Guy said that he remembered that too but on the 888, I should keep it at 'max.' So just an FYI.

The 880 is a soft compound tire, sticky, and a soft ride. The 888 is a MT tread, higher mileage, hard harsher riding tire, and they can be slippery on some Harley's. The 880 has a recent history of tread delamination. The 888 will replace the 880 in the future. The 888 also has 2 different tire casings, the regular and the Ultra. The Ultra runs a higher TP.
