Default Metzler ME 880 FAILURE!

I cannot stress enough to do a pre-ride inspection before every ride!!!
This actually happened last November and my ultra has been sitting ever since. Finally got around to changing out the rear tire yesterday.
This Metzler ME 880 had 3700mi on it and was on the bike for 3 years, been traveling a lot out of country so the bike has sat.
The day this happened i had run about 70 miles on the turnpike at speeds over 100mph.
Got off work and as i was approaching the bike something looked off, looked like the rear tire was low on air. Got out the compressor and gauge and got down on the ground to find the valve and that's when i seen the tire was de-laminating and chunks of the tread were missing!!
Swapped out to Michelin's and will never run another Metzler again, in fact just ordered Michelin's for the other 2 bikes.

Old issue that just keeps on happening. I had one shed the entire tread at high speed on the dyno recently. Over $5000 worth of damage to the bike. Probably a fatality if it happened on the road. I agree with you—- don’t use the Metzler tires!

O wow I had no idea it was a known issue. Yea when I seen it my butthole puckered a bit knowing my riding style which is very aggressive. Had always ran continentals until last tire change or the stock Dunlop’s til I could t stand their lack of grip any longer. Giving the Michelin’s the ol college try.

Had 880's on my heritage. Thought they sucked. Very noisy in turns. Lousy traction in rain....gone!

Crap,

I just bought a set.

It was the only wide whitewall that I could find for my front end.

I guess that there going on evil bay.

Please feel free to Send me any 170/ 60r17 or 130/70r18 that you're not going to mount. Thank you in advance. On the serious side that's very scary but I just took off an 880 off the rear with almost 9k in it that was beyond worn out and replaced it with same...cant get an 888 in my size yet. I'm completely confident in the metzlers but like any tire I'll keep my eye on its condition and pressure before every ride. Glad you didn't get hurt.

Just curious, Is the shredded area only there in that 8" section?

Sorry to hear.. that is a serious issue. Did you try to contact Metzeler? What size and rating was the rear tire and what bike did you have it in? I would really like to know.... Thanks... All I run is Metzeler's me880 and now triple 8's never had an issue 140 mph on the street and over 160 on a dyno... 150/80-16 77H REINFTL on the rear and a 120/70 ZR 19 (60w) TL front..

This is the 3rd time I've heard of someone using metzlers and chunks falling off the tire..I currently have them on my FXR. I'll never get them again
