Default Has anyone tried polishing an aluminum mag?

I ride an 07 FLHX. I put a chrome aftermarket front wheel on it. I left the stock rear wheel because you can hardly see it. If I am standing in a parking lot and my bike is parked 30 feet away I can only see the bottom of the wheel. I can see the tire and about 3 inches of the wheel. The bike has the cast aluminum mag with black powder on it. Being able to see that black powder is bothering me. Not enough to spend $800 on a new chrome wheel, but enough to strip the powder off and try to polish it. I talked to a friend that has a powder shop and he told me that aircraft stripper from Autozone will take the powder off. After I get the wheel stripped and polished I am going to have him shoot clear powder on it so it's easy to clean. I know I am not going to get a chrome like finish. Hell I know I won't get a polished billet finish. Has anyone tried to polish one of these wheels? If I end up with a clear powder coated silver wheel I will be satisfied. I am just curious if anyone has had success polishing one of these and how they achieved that success.

thanks,
hog

you know I thought about it myself, and I've read posts from people who have done it,alot of work required, you have to get the paint off, then they have to be sanded to a smooth finish so they can be polished. the ideal situation would be to put another rear wheel on while you work on the one you take off. I say if you got alot of time on your hands go for it, polished aluminum looks great.
