Default The belt to chain drive conversion thread

In an effort to create a informational topic about converting your Dyna to rear (final) chain drive lets start a thread with technical information and experiences to help others in their chain conversions.

** Please refrain from comments and opinions regarding the merits of belts vs. chains... PLEASE **

Some people want chain drive and that's what this thread is for.

Great thread lama, subscribed... Also if guys could include their sprocket sizes and final drive ratio that would be perfect! I just so happen to be in the market for a chain conversion

Edit: my bad lama I didn't realize you weren't done setting it up... Didn't mean to interrupt

* There will definitely be two major categories of conversions:

1) 2005 and "below" bikes and their particular parts. ( 5 speed transmission sprocket )

2) 2006 and "up" bikes and the respective needs. ( 6 speed cruise drive transmission sprocket )

** There are two ways to go about this:

1) Buy a pre-made kit from one of the listed vendors.

2) Piece together parts from various vendors and go about it yourself.

*** There are a few reasons people will want to change from belt to chain:

1) Increased tensile strength of a drive chain vs. Kevlar belt. (wheelies, big inch motors, etc.)

2) The ability to alter final drive gear ratios easily without having to continually remove the primary drive.

3) The "coolness factor" of a mechanical appearing chain drive.

4) The ability to change the drive chain for wear or age, without the need for removal of the primary drive system (belt).

**** Some issues needed to be dealt with:

1) The tools and parts needed to perform the conversion.

2) Chain contact with various parts of the chassis and or the driveline.

3) Care for the chain drive after installation.

4) Speedometer adjustment after conversion.

^^

Not sure if I'd do this but want to make sure I get my post in on the first page of Lama's thread.

You never know, it may end up like his Club/Thug and that thread is like the lost 11th commandment that didn't make it on Moses's tablets
