Default Quick Vance and Hines short shots install question

Got a set of short shots for my Father's Day gift and I'm putting them on this evening. I've got an 09 Fat Bob. So far so good.. the instructions are very nice. I do have a question about the exhaust gaskets. The instructions recommended that I purchase some new Screamin Eagle # 17048-98 gaskets, which I did this morning before taking everything off. However, as I removed the stock exhaust, I didn't see any factory gaskets. Anyone else with a Fatbob that's done this mod have some advice for me. Should I simply put the new short shots on without any gaskets or should I put the Screamin Eagle ones on ? Or, am I not seeing where the stock exhaust gaskets are ? From what I'm seeing the stock exhaust pipes were simply mated to the cylinder heads with no gasket at all ? I was surprised as to how easy it was to back off the exhaust flange nuts. Didn't seem like they were torqued to more than 30-40 ft. lbs.

Thanks,

Christian

As SuperFastGlide said, the gaskets are there even if you don't think they are.
You can pretty much bet if you didn't have any gaskets, you'd have a very bad exhaust leak.

I put the V&H Short Shots on my Fat Bob when it was rather new, and I was able to re-use the stock gaskets.
You won't always be able to that however, it would just depend on the condition of the gaskets.

OK...thanks. I used a pick and pulled them out. I'll put in the new Screamin Eagle ones that I bought this morning.

The exhaust flange nuts are susposed to be 100-120 in/lbs on my wide glide, same engine so im sure they torque the same.. so 30-40 ft/lbs would be WAY to much anyways..

I believe what your describing only applies to international models.
Active Exhaust Valve

The US models don't have this, so you might need to do some searching to find out the full details on disabling it.
Here is one thread that might help.
