Default Difference between fxdl and fxd gas tank

I was wondering what the difference between a fxd and fxdl gas tanks are. I'm sure the paint is different but what about the physical part of the tank?

What the specific differences are depends on the year of the bike, but in general tank mounts and mounts for the dash/ignition, etc. In 07 the Street Bob and Lowrider shared a tank, the Wide Glide and FXDC shared one, and the FXD tank was unique.

In 2000 the Lowrider tank was unique, the Wide Glide was unique, and the FXD, FXDC, and FXDX shared a tank.

as for the tank itself....no difference other than the lowrider tank has fuel gauge and gas cap recesses cut into them.

The only real difference between the two is where you put the gas in. FXD has a center fill and no bungs for gauge or filler. All other have bungs.

All Dyna EFI tanks will mount up on any Dyna, difference will be the consoles.
All the internals are the same on all EFI Dynas as well.

The tanks will all interchange, but the details can present a hassle. The wiring for the FXD has the speedo lead going up to the handlebars, where the gauge mounts. For the FXDL the lead goes to the center of the tank with the console mounted gauge. There is a tach on the FXDL which the FXD doesn't have. I am guessing that the wiring harnesses are different and that might be a consideration if you're changing tanks. If you don't mind splicing and extending wires, I guess there would be little problem for you to adapt one to the other.
FXD has an aircraft style filler and the FXDL has a regular threaded cap on one side and a dummy cap with fuel gauge in it. So, you'll need all the hardware with the tank, too.

96-03 Lowrider tank will fit, I'm in the middle of this conversion myself on my 2000 fxdx. Collecting parts, so far I have the tank and the gauge console and bracket.

The bracket is a BITCH to find, good luck! I ended up finding a forum member to sell me the whole console including the bracket.
