Default Short Shots as header pipe?

So the previous owner of 03 FXD put short shots on the bike, no OEM exhaust to be found, and I'm stuck tring to improve performance. Is my only option a new system on or can I use the pipes of the short shots forward of the baffles as my header pipe for say slip ons or the base for a custom welded up system? Thanks.

I'm not sure I get what you're saying.

Did the previous owner replace the entire exhaust? The other alternative would have been original headers and slip-ons. The Short Shots (assuming they're V&H) are good performance pipes with a better air filter and proper jetting.

My Short Shots are one pipe. There are no attached muffler sections. The baffles are bolted inside the tail end of each pipe.

They are both one pipe, ie not slip ons. I guess what I'm asking is if I chop the baffle section off, could I use them in place of factory headers for a custom exhaust?

I don't see any reason why not. I've seen pictures with the heat shields off and I think they look cool that way. I don't know why you couldn't weld longer pipes or, if you can find one that fits, a 2-1 'y' section.

2-1 is what I'm thinking. Ill keep all posted but just wanted to make sure there wasn't something obviously stupid about the idea...

I'm sure you can put something together that will work and look good, assuming you have the skills. I don't have them.

There are also several inexpensive exhaust options out there for your year bike. I picked up my Short Shots from a Forum member for $125 plus shipping.
