I just changed the intake seals and rebuilt the carb because it was running lean.Now while warming up with the choke out it runs great no and intake seal leaks.But when its warm and I put the choke in it doesn't want to idle and it is coughing out the carb.I've tried adjusting the mixutre screw and that made no difference I also blew it out with air and still the same result.It will rev up fine but to hold it any rpm at a constant speed it will stumble and cough and even worse trying to come off idle.Its all stock with only h-d slip ons and an arlen ness big sucker and the carb has a#42 pilot jet and #165 main and two turns out on the mix screw.I don't know what to do?

 

If it runs good with the choke on it's starving for fuel. Did you rebuild the carb and clean it properly, or just spray it out with carb cleaner? Sounds like it has been sitting awhile and that happens to every carb that does. There are super small holes in the carb body that get plugged with varnish. What needs to be done is to dissemble the carb and soak the body in carb cleaner. Then blow out the passages well. Put it back together and run some carb cleaner in the gas. Seafoam or Gummout works good, but you have to run a couple of tanks of treated gas thru it to really clean it out.,,

 

Did it run like that before?
VOES vacuum hose disconnected?

 

I cleaned it 100% inspected every thing before I put it together.It ran good before but the plugs were bone white and when trying to start it up warm it would stall and stumble until I gave it half choke.That and when hot it wasn't idling right it would run at 1,000 rpm warm and pick up to 1,300-1,400 when hot.I added the arlen ness big sucker after I rebuilt the carb and it already had punched out h-d slip ons from before.I tried a #45 pilot jet and a #175 main and it ran better but still coughed real bad.so I went back to the stock #42 and #165 jets and it running worse. I haven't touched the needle.I'm not sure what size jets and needle I need for a stage one upgrade.Also this is a '93 fxdwg.voes is conected and was working fine previously.

 

If the low speed passages are deffinately clean and the nozzle above the emulsion tube is installed correct, float level ok ,3 turns out on the pilot screw, you'd have to have a vacuum leak somewhere.

 

I've checked the intake seals while its running with wd-40 and have no change in the rpm.It has all new seals.When I'm trying to come off idle it sounds like its starving for gas.If I give it a accelerator pump shot its snappy and revs right up.I still have the factory jets in this thing and I live at sea level if that makes any difference.When trying to restart it now when its warm it will either backfire and smoke out the pipes or pop out the carb and smoke like its on fire.I'm going to pull the carb back off and check the low speed passages and check all the seals.

 

Try a 48 or 50 lo-speed jet. If that don't cure it then you most certainly have a vacuum leak or other issue.

 

Check the float level, make sure the jets are tight, the needle jet is in right side up(it's the silver thing that the needle goes in and sits on top of the main jet holder), and the diaphragm is not ripped/torn or installed wrong. You can go to Lowes and get an empty one gallon paint can and some lacquer thinner. Put the thinner and the disassembled carb in the can, put the cover on and let it soak overnight. Remove the carb body and using high pressure air blow out all the passages and re-assamble the carb according to the manual. Besure you have the little spring, flat washer and o-ring under the idle mixture screw. the slide should go up and down with ease. Hope this helps.

 

I have drag pipes and a K&N air cleaner on my 99, and I have a 45 pilot jet, and a 180 main. Works real good, and only need the enrichner to start, then push it in and keep the motor running with the throttle lock till it warms up a little. Still get 50 mpg.

 

I got it fixed.I took the carb off cleaned out the low speed passage again and checked it with a light and air.I also reset the intake seals and installed a #45 low speed jet and its running like a stuck pig now.Thanks for the replies.
