Default question on swapping a 4 speed kicker on a 5 speed evo...

I found a great deal on a 88 heritage that has 5 speed. I wanted to buy a hardtail frame and use the motor. but was wondering if a 4 speed from a shovelhead or any 4 speed be compatable?

thank you again.

I believe that will depend on the frame you buy. I have not seen anybody mpunt the tranny plate to an evo frame from a 4 speed. This sounds like more work than I would wanna get involved in. I do see that most aftermarket frames are made for softail style drivetrains and even the ones that are hardtails and or swingarm models. I just can't be 100% certain however. The 1984 softail came with a kicker but I am sure that is a rare and expensive item. If you already have shovel tranny then see if Johnjz can answer your questions. He seems to know a lot off the top of his head. Maybe pm him??
Good luck and report back regardless of the outcome as this question has been asked and will be asked but is rarely ever answered.

If the objective is to have a kicker, get a kit to add one to your 5 speed, or just buy a 5 speed trans with kicker. Trying to use a 4 speed is a step backwards.

If you're buying a rigid frame, buy one set up for the tranny you want. Pan, Shovel, evo motor mounts are the same. The frame is built for the tranny. You'll also have to determine if you want drum brake or disc and chain or belt.

You can buy a 4 speed hardtail frame and it will bolt right up...but then you have to buy a 4 speed, clutch, and complete 4 speed primary with starter, or beltdrive...and after spending all this money...you will have to register it as a "special construction"...it will no longer be a harley on the title...which will make it worth less money, and can cause insurance headaches...sure you want to do this?...5 speed kickstarts are pretty cheap.
