Default 97 Heritage Charging System

Hello, I am posting this question for a friend. He has a 97 Heritage with a Compu Fire 40 amp 3 phase charging system. When He leaves the Stator plugged up it will drain the battery down after a few days (without a battery tender plugged up) and take the tender hours to get back to fully charged. When he unplugs the stator there is no drain on the battery and the tender goes immediately to (green) charged. He believes it could be a grounded stator. Is there a test that can be done to diagnose the issue and determine if the stator is grounded? I enjoy helping him work on his Evo but I'm still learning so all this is kinda Latin to me.

Thanks very much for the info and help!!!

Check out Dr. Hess's sticky above.
The one about checking your charging system.

Evo's didn't come with 3 phase systems, and my diagnostic experience with them is thus limited to some e-help. That said, checking for a grounded stator is basically the same as in the sticky. However, my money is on a bad voltage regulator in this case.

Thanks for the info! I will read the sticky. I am guessing he changed out the charging system to a 3 phase.
