Default S&S CARB HELP/ENRICHER

I picked up a '98 Heritage with a Super E carb that needed to berejetted and some other adjustments. Anyway, I have the carb just about dialed in but whenever I try to start the bike withthe enrichment lever the bike stalls immediately. The bike did the same thing when I got it. I had the enrichment apart and see no problems. Bike doesn't seem to be to rich or lean. Any suggestions ?

try pulling the lever only halfway up.Ive been doing this for 15 yrs...it was always a problem with it all the way up.It starts much easier for me even when it was cold outside....maybe a few squirts also.

I can't even pull up on the lever a bit and it stalls....I've been starting it with 4 twists and then holding open the throttle a monute or so.

if its warm outside say above 60 degrees, you dont or shouldnt use the enrichner.I dont use mine in warm weather.Sounds like the mixture may need to be adjusted .Hows the idle once warm ?Should be up around or above 700 rpm or to where it least doesnt lope if you dont have an rpm gauge. In warmer weather,I generally use the the throttle lock for a high idle warm up.Excessive enrichner or choke will foul the plugs.

Idle once warm is perfect. Bike also starts great when warmed up. I tweeked the mixture yesterday and I'm getting close. I'm just concerned a little cause the bike is for my wife and I'm afraid she may have trouble keeping it running on first start. Weird that the bike starts without choke but idles to low til warmed up a little, but yet you can't use a little choke. However a lightbulb lit when you said about using the throttle lock. Knowing my wife, she would forget to release the lockall the way.

sounds like mixture still...EVO doesnt require much warm up before you ride it.The oiling system is different than a twin cam .Needs to be up and running asap when started so oil circulates soon.Good luck.(with the throttle lock scenario).

I have a 98 with a super E and while I don't use the enricher at all when the air is above 60 deg., I can still pull the enricher all the way up and it will start and run. Maybe you have too much accel. pump in it, turn it all the way in and then back it out 1/4 turn at a time until there is no hesitation when you blip the throttle. If that doesn't help, you may be running too rich.

fxstcguy98, Been down this road, thanks. I have the accel pump dialed in pretty good. I can hit the throttle and it is crisp and no smoke. As far as rich, if anything I could be lean. .0265 intermediate, 70 main. I have a V&H 2:1, std S&S air cleaner,EV27 cam. I had a.028 in her but it was running rich with smoke and backfiring. I can't seem to nail this problem. Plugs look gray with shade of brown mixed in and a dark ring where the strap attaches.

Well took the bike this morning, it was about 65degrees. Four twisties and she fired right up. Just had to keep on the throttle when I pulled out til she warmed up. Not gonna worry about the choke I suppose. hopefully she'll start this good when its cold out all day.

That's pretty much what I do, keep the throttle up until the stop sign 2 blocks away, then it will idle fine. I put a SE ignition module in a couple of weeks before I put in the EV27 and it seemed to really smooth out how it ran at idle and low rpms, made it less cold natured as well. Once the bike is warmed up, I don't twist the throttle at all before I start it.
