Default Mikuni choke cable problem

All of a sudden my choke won't stay out. Pull it out to start it and it just pops back in. It's less than a year old. Is it possible the detent has worn out ? It's not really a huge deal now that it's summer but I need to get it figured out for when the temp drops. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

Is your choke cable a Mikuni or are you using the HD cable? If Mikuni, has an adjuster and a hold open detent(per the Tuning manual). The HD choke has a friction adjuster. I have have a Mikuni on my bike using the HD cable. I hope this helps.

Like mfd1068 said, the Mikuni supplied cable has a detent to hold it open and an adjustment in the cable down toward the carb and the HD choke cable has a friction nut right behind the ****. You can tighten it a little and it will stay out. If it has a letter C or the word Choke on the **** it is the HD cable, the Mikuni cable has a brass bump in the center of the ****. The majority of the time it will be the HD cable.

One note of caution, if it -IS- the standard HD enrichener cable:

To tighten it, you first have to loosen the "bolt" that is holding the entire assembly in place, then drop the cable out of it, and THEN tighten it.

After that, put it back into place and snug up the bolt. DON'T over-torque this!

A common mistake when trying to "tighten" the enrichener so that it doesn't slip back in, is to tighten it without loosening the big bolt and "dropping it down".

This can break the plastic housing that encircles the cable, and then you won't be able to tighten it at all -- only option is replacement...

It is the Mikuni cable. I saw in the manual about the adjustment but I figured if it worked fine for a year it might be something else. Can they go out of adjustment like that?

I assume the carb has to come off to make this adjustment?

You might be able to reach the adjuster from under the carb but you would be working blind. I would pull the carb and look it over good myself. It only takes about 5 minutes to pull the carb or put it back on, maybe a little longer if you've never done it before but it is still pretty simple to do just make sure you get it seated good when you put it back on.

Well I took off the Mikuni and messed with the adjustment and could not get the damned thing to stay out. So it wouldn't be a total waste of time I did raise the jet needle one notch to try dealing with some pinging. Seemed to be a little better. Maybe the choke cable has gone bad?

In hindsight I should have just put my old harley choke cable in it per the Mikuni instructions. Maybe next week
