77 xlt oil hoses
Ok I am well into the re assembly but I can't remember the oil line connection. Bottom of the tank goes to the oil pump. Scavange from the pump goes to the oil cooler. oil cooler return goes to the 3/8 fitting near thetop of the tank, I think. where does the 1/4 fitting at the neck of the tank go?

The 1/4" fitting at the top of the tank is the oil tank vent. The line runs to a fitting on the rear edge of the gearcase [cam] cover. This PhotoBucket album, contains closeup pics of the oil line routing on my 1978 - sane as your 1977. I also run an oil cooler ...

I made those pics a few years ago when i finally figured out how to run them, especially the way the return line, tank vent line, and starter motor cable run under the starter motor. If they are not run [u]exactly[/] the way i have them in the pic i cannot get the starter motor installed.

Out from the pump, up to the cooler, back along the frame ...
Thru this clip ...
Behind the gearcase/sprocket covers ...
Under the starter motor with the oil tank vent line and the starter motor cable ...
Thru here...
Thru this messy area and up along the frame to the top of the oil tank ...
Note that the return line must be well zip tied to the frame tube to keep both itself and that feed line away from the sprocket. Not much clearance there at all.
This is the factory way to run the lines. There is a simpler way avoiding the mess under the starter motor. Next time i run these i will investigate that way.

we run them under the starter its cleaner and they are ( slightly )flattened, BUT i have been doing it that way forever and not seen any affect that causes a problem with the oiling system - i dont have a picture and the iron engine we are doing in the shop right now is too far away from this to help -- jz

Sorry, no pics.
The main harness comes out of the headlite bucket on the left side and runs along the left side/underneath the backbone. It must be loose enough between the headlite and the first zip tie to allow full turn of the bars to the right. I place the 1st zip tie about 1/3 of the way along, not too close to the front. I tuck it under the gas tank as best i can.
