Gear Whine

Gear Whine
I've got an '08 FLHX Street Glide - 6speed - 96 CI. It's got about 9000 miles on it and I've noticed gear whine over the course of the last few months. Not necessarily at any speed, but definitely when I let off the gas and coast letting the tranny slow me down. As a matter of fact, I'd say it whines in 5th and 6th gear accelerating AND declerating. Every other gear decelerating only.
Is this normal or something serious?
I'll get it in the shop, but I doubt it will be a dealer. There are plenty of great shops here in sunny south florida that won't rip me off and do the job right. Heard good things about Red's Racing. Harley's only. Gotta love that.
Thanks for any info on this...

I know many of the earlier 6 speeds have noise and many have complained about. In later 6 speed they went to helical cut gears on 5th and 6th gear to elmeante this problem but not sure what year they did this change. I think they make kits to remendy the problem where you get replacement helical cut gears for 5th and 6th.

Change the trans oil to redline shockproof heavy 75w250 synthetic gear oil. It will quiet down the gears quite a bit. Cost: $13.95 & shiping. You can run it 20,000 miles no problem.
